Left Screen Area

Overview
The Left
Screen Area is a broad vertical band running down the left margin of all TIARA screens. This area contains many of the most important user-selectable controls through which the user interacts
with the TIARA system. These controls are grouped for convenience
into "Function Groups" that contain
functionally-related sets of controls. The four current function groups are (from top to bottom): "Finders", "Show", "Go to" and "Back to". Some function groups and
user-selectable controls are visible only on certain TIARA screens. This page
contains brief descriptons of the user-selectable controls found in the Left
Screen Area of all TIARA screens. Each user-selectable control is described
under the function group to which it belongs.
The active TIARA screen is flagged with a magnifying glass icon (
).
User-Selectable Controls

(displayed on all screens)
- "TIARA" image link - Click on the TIARA logo to display the TIARA Home Page. This action is exactly equivalent to clicking on "Home" in the Blue Menu Bar
at the top of the screen.
Finders
Function Group (displayed on all screens)
Show
Function Group (displayed only on
Taxon Home Page screens and the TIARA
home page screen)
- "Classification" text link - Click on
the Classification link to display the higher classification of the
active taxon. Frequently, this classification will provide information on
taxonomic subcategories that are not represented in the Finders or Taxon
Lists displays (e.g., suborder, superfamily, subfamily, tribe). The Classification
link is available only on Taxon Home Page screens.
- "Collaborators" text link - Click on the Collaborators link to
display information about the people, institutions and organizations that
have contributed data, funding or special skills to the TIARA project. The
Classification link is available only from the TIARA Home Page screen.
- "Contact Us" text link - Click on the Contact Us link
to display information about how to contact the TIARA project manager. The Classification link is
available only from the TIARA Home Page screen.
- "Images" text link - Click on the Images link to access images pertaining to
the active taxon. The Image link is available only on Taxon Home Page screens
where appropriate images are contained in the TIARA system. For additional

- "Join Us" text link - Click on the Join Us link to display information about how
to joint the TIARA project as a collaborator. The Join Us link is available
only from the TIARA Home Page screen.
- "Maps" text link - Click on the Maps link to access maps pertaining to the
active taxon. The Maps link is available only on Taxon Home Page screens where
appropriate map data are contained in the TIARA system. For additional

- "Overview" text link - Click on the Overview link to display a general overview of the TIARA system. The Join Us link is available only from the TIARA Home Page screen. See also: General Overview for Newcomers.
- "Specimens" text link - Click on the Specimens link to access specimen-level records pertaining to the
active taxon. The Specimens link is available only on Taxon Home Page screens where
appropriate specimen data are contained in the TIARA system. For additional

- "Taxon Lists" text link - Click on the Taxon Lists
link to access taxon lists pertaining to the active taxon. The Taxon Lists link
is available only on Taxon Home Page screens. For additional information
about the Taxon Lists Screen see: Help for the Taxon Lists Screen.
- "TAMU Holdings" text link - Click on the TAMU Holdings link to display
general holdings information for the active taxon in the Texas A&M University Insect Collection. The
TAMU Holdings link is available only on Taxon Home Page screens where appropriate TAMU
holdings data are contained in the TIARA system. For additional information

- "What's New" text link - Click on the What's New link to display episodically
updated information about new functionality and data developed for the TIARA web site.
The What's New link is available only from the TIARA Home
Page screen.
- "Web Links" text link - Click on the Web Links
link to display a list of external web links pertaining to the active taxon. The
Web Links link is available only on Taxon Home Page screens where appropriate web
link data are contained in the TIARA system. For additional information

Go to
Function Group (displayed only on
Taxon Home Page screens)
Taxon home page icon(s) - Click on a yellow Taxon Home Page Icon to jump directly to the Home Page for the taxon whose name
the icon follows.
Taxon list icon - Click on a blue Taxon List icon to jump directly to the Taxon Lists screen of the active taxon and display a list of taxa of the rank specified in front of the icon.
Back to Function Group (displayed
only on Taxon
Home Page screens)
- "Last finder" text link
- Click on the Last Finder link to jump back
to the last Finder that you used. This may be helpful when you want
to use the results displayed on a Finder screen as an index
page to link to multiple taxon pages. The Last Finder link remembers the last Finder screen
from which you activated a link to a taxon page, and allows you to
jump back to that Finder. Note that a Finder that was only viewed, i.e., looked at
but not used to link to a taxon page, cannot be jumped
back to using the Last Finder link. To move back to a viewed-only Finder use
the "Back" function on the Blue Menu Bar, or reselect the Finder from
its link in the Finders Function Group.
