Introduction

The goal of the Bibliography of the Neuropterida project is to compile a comprehensive bibliography of literature relating to the lacewings and their allies (insect orders Neuroptera, Megaloptera and Raphidioptera). The source files for the bibliography are maintained by John D. Oswald in a relational database, from which new versions of the bibliography are downloaded after sufficient new data has accumulated (perhaps once or twice a year). Over the past few years, several print-manuscript versions of the bibliography have been circulated amongst a small group of colleagues, who have encouraged me to make the text more widely available. It is hoped that this online version will accomplish this objective (as well as relieve me of the task of copying and distributing the ca. 175-page print version!). Please let me know how well this document meets your bibliographic needs and give me your ideas on desirable improvements.

Caution! The Bibliography of the Neuropterida is a "working" and evolving document. It has been compiled primarily by visually scanning "References Cited" lists and other short published and unpublished reference lists. I have personally verified bibliographic data only for somewhere between one-half and two-thirds of the references cited. Data for other references are unconfirmed. Many citations are known to be incomplete.

Help! Please help me improve the bibliography by supplying me with bibliographic data that completes, corrects or adds to the existing bibliographic citations. Data provided by users will be incorporated into future editions at the earliest opportunity. Colleagues, please send me reprints of your Neuropterida-related papers as they are published so that I can be sure to include them in new versions of the bibliography. Collaborators with expertise in languages that do not use the Roman alphabet are sought to improve and expand the coverage of the Bibliography in these language areas.

The Bibliography of the Neuropterida project first went online in 1984 at a gopher site at the California Academy of Sciences (courtesy of Norman D. Penny) as Version 4.gopher. The bibliography debuted as a web page on the Department of Entomology server at Texas A&M University on 28 February 1996 as Version 5.www.
