Position Title: Assistant Professor in Field Crop Entomology (NOV #04095)

Appointment: Twelve month, non-tenure track with a 100% Research appointment

Location: Texas AgriLIFE Research and Extension Center, Corpus Christi, Texas

General Duties and Responsibilities: The incumbent faculty member will have primary responsibility for developing an extramurally funded and nationally recognized research program to minimize the impact of insect pests on crop production systems with a particular emphasis on South Texas systems. Expected areas of emphasis include but are not limited to: 1) evaluation of control methods for various species of sucking insects in cotton (i.e. plant bugs, fleahoppers, stink bugs); 2) evaluation and development of IPM methods to minimize the impact of insects in area crops; 3) development, verification and validation of simulation models of population dynamics of arthropod pests and natural enemies in crop production systems of South Texas; and 4) support and advice local institutions in post- boll weevil eradication activities. The incumbent will be part of a multidisciplinary team of Research and Extension scientists involved in the development of best management practices for the production of crops in South Texas. The research program is expected to yield new discoveries that substantially advance the scientific discipline and have economic value to end-user groups. Participation in graduate student training is expected. Center, Department, Agency, and Professional service appropriate to each individual’s talents and skills are expected of all Faculty.

Administrative Relationships: Direct supervision will be provided by the Corpus Christi Center Director and secondarily by the Entomology Department Head. The incumbent faculty member shall exhibit collegiality to all faculty, staff, students, clientele groups, and local administrators. Additionally, the candidate is expected to cooperate and collaborate with Faculty (independent of affiliation) as appropriate to the successful execution of their general duties and responsibilities and in support of the Texas AgriLIFE Research and Extension Center, Corpus Christi and the Department of Entomology mission and goals.

Qualifications: Ph.D. in Entomology or a related field in the biological sciences. Candidate must have demonstrated knowledge of field and laboratory experimentation that utilizes an appropriate combination of modern ecological, behavioral, cellular, and/or molecular-level approaches. The candidate should have insights or experiences in linking broad, new scientific discoveries with technologies and applications valuable to end-user groups.

Resources and Facilities: The incumbent will be located at the Texas AgriLIFE Research and Extension Center in Corpus Christi. This Center and the Department of Entomology are part of the Texas A&M University System; both are well recognized for their entomological programs. AgriLIFE Research is the state’s only agency dedicated to research and technology development in food, agriculture and natural resources. The Center has 65 full-time employees (44 Research, 21 Extension); 167 acres of research land, 23,890 square feet of office, laboratory, classroom, auditorium, and greenhouse space. The successful candidate will be provided with quality office and laboratory space, access to Department assistantships and internal grant programs, and a generous startup package.
